Music in the primary school is taught by specialist
teachers. Students in FS1 and 2 have music for 30 minutes each week and all
other year groups receive one hour each week. Years 1-4 have two 30 minute
music lessons a week and years 5 and 6 have one hour lessons.
The music curriculum is derived from the National Curriculum
of England and Wales. It focusses on four key areas of music education:
performance, composition, listening and appraising. As much as possible
projects are based on topics that are being studied in Year groups and students
will sing songs related to those topics.
The Early Years Foundation Stage:
At Foundation Stage children are encouraged to participate
in active music making by:
Singing simple songs from memory
Recognising repeated sounds and sound patterns
Matching movements to music.
They are introduced to a variety of classroom percussion
instruments and are encouraged to learn their names and recognise the sounds
Key Stage 1
Children will get an understanding of the musical elements
of pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, texture and structure by singing and
playing instruments. They also compose and perform their own compositions.
Key Stage 2
KS2 children also compose and perform their own
compositions. They appraise musical performance from a variety of eras,
cultures and styles. Emphasis is placed on developing confidence, teamwork and
learning within a creative environment.
Topics include a practical and theoretical approach and the
study of musical elements. Year 6 children will acquire keyboard skills.
Music outside the classroom
Students from Years 2 -6 have the opportunity to learn
musical instruments via the school's instrumental music service. They can also
participate in junior brass and flute ensembles and a junior string orchestra.
Children in Years 3 - 6 can join a keyboard club and there is a recorder club
for children in Years 2 - 6. There are two choirs in the primary school - a
junior choir (Years 2-4) and senior choir (Years 4 and
Key Stage 2 students can also participate in a yearly
musical production (see primary productions.)
